Snake River Overlook


Snake River Overlook, 30 min. before sunrise

This morning at about 5:00, the Snake River Overlook was deserted except for a semi rig whose driver had parked for a rest. The above shot is a 20-second single exposure, 14mm, on Nikon D500, at ISO 3200. The moon is nearly full, so you can still see a bit of its glow on the western horizon. I was lucky here in that the moon was out nearly all night, and I was able to catch just a few minutes of darkness before sunrise.

When Ansel Adams captured his most famous image of the Tetons, it was from this very spot. It turns out that trees can grow quite a bit in 73 years, so some maneuvering is required to get much of any view of the river. After shooting the above starlight photo from the overlook wall, I decided to try my luck at scrambling to a spot that afforded a little more river view than the trees allow from the main overlook. The result is below.
