One Big Reason Not to Head for Tahoe on a Summer Weekend

It is practically impossible to get around this lake right now. Tahoe losing big points today. I was able to make this entire post at a standstill via iPhone.
[Later note] There was no accident. No road construction. This was simply a matter of too many cars in too little space. Today, Highway 89 reminded me of Disneyland’s Main Street at peak season. But it was a nightmare version, because instead of people walking, everybody was driving cars. Moms, dads, grandmas, grandpas, babies, didn’t matter. Everybody had a car. Everybody was driving. Any space at the side of the road even remotely wide enough to accommodate a car was occupied. So we were trapped. We could not get out of the jam. We could not move. We could not pull off. We… were… trapped….
But we finally made it to Meeks Bay so the boys could swim. It took us 90 minutes to go 17 miles. The last 10 miles took about 15 minutes. If you’ll forgive the Lloyd Bentsen ripoff, “Tahoe, I knew Getting Away from It All. You’re no Getting Away from It All.”

Be careful if you go to Yosemite. I here it’s just like this.

My friend, Brent, warned me I think in the nicest possible way. He said something along the lines of, “You know, Tahoe is more popular in the summertime than in winter.” I didn’t think it through enough to seriously consider altering the itinerary, which I may very well have done, knowing what I know now. We’re not heading to Yosemite, but I have heard it is ridiculously crowded. We’re going to see if we can get on the gondola to the top of the mountain today. Hopefully it will be a tad better on a Sunday morning.

My cousin was in a car on that road too. Uncle has a cabin in Homewood. I’ve visited several times but Tahoe does not beckon me the way Central Oregon does. BTW my parents have a big Class C that we are lucky enough to use pretty much whenever we want. It’s great!
    Safe travels!
