“Three Thumbs Up” for Captain America

After weeks in the desert, the boys and I were ready for some pop culture. There was also a strong military mood in the trailer from the earlier plastic army men battle waged on the living room floor, so we decided to take in Captain America on opening night at Harvey’s casino. We piled into the pickup and found parking in the garage. Let me tell you, I’ve never clenched as hard as I did when driving the truck in that garage. Except for the antenna, we did not touch the “low clearance” sign at the entrance, but we couldn’t have had more than two inches to spare. We hopped out and took the stairwells to the ground. Apparently, it is a Stateside tradition to urinate on the landings, but we chose to plug our noses and head for the real restrooms as needed.
About Captain America: Here’s a movie that had every opportunity to be twice as silly as Green Lantern, but took none of the wrong turns I expected. We went in cold, not having seen any reviews or read any early buzz on it, but I was already cringing as I walked in, remembering the old TV show (I think it was in the early 80s) that even I thought was stupid as a pre-teen. In short, boys and I really enjoyed it. It hit just the right notes of superhero fun and action without taking itself too seriously.
