I don’t suppose his name needs much explanation, but the interesting thing about Big Stoney (and his several less-well-endowed friends) is that Kodachrome Basin State Park is the only place in the world where you’ll find this particular type of rock formation, called a “sand pipe.” Experts don’t know for sure how the sand pipes formed, but one theory is that high pressures from geologic events like earthquakes shoved calcite, quartz, feldspar, and other stony sediment upwards. Then, the surrounding softer sandstone eroded to leave particularly striking phallic symbols for Mormons to admire as they settled the area.
